Overview

New Jereseyans deserve to live in a healthy and toxic-free environment. Unfortunately, conditions like cancer, birth defects and childhood asthma are all linked to chemicals commonly found in popular consumer products, released into our air and water, or dumped into toxic waste sites right in our neighborhoods. In 2004 alone, New Jersey industries released over 17 million pounds of toxics to our air and water. We also have over 14,000 known contaminated waste sites. NJPIRG stands up to polluters to reduce the risks that these hazardous materials create in our communities.

Platform

Our comprehensive platform has three principles:

•    Cleaning up toxic sites: We must ensure that New Jersey has the resources to remove these health threats, and that polluters pay their fair share of cleanup costs.

•    Reducing toxic pollution: Some New Jersey industries continue to pour toxic chemicals into our air and water – even when safer alternatives exist. It’s time to require these polluters to reduce their toxics use.

•    Toxic-free schools and products: Manufacturers continue to expose us to toxics by putting them in products we use everyday, ranging from lipstick to baby bottles. Let’s eliminate unnecessary toxic chemicals from consumer products used in our homes and schools.

Using these principles, together we can build healthier communities for all New Jerseyans.

All Americans deserve to live and work in a healthy environment. That's why NJPIRG is working to reduce the toxic content of industrial waste, fund the cleanup of toxic dumps, and make powerful interests tell the truth about what they're putting into our air and water.
